Program Overview:
The Cultural Exchange and Temporary Part-Time Work Program offers international students the opportunity to experience U.S. culture while working part-time in the U.S. through partnerships with Commonwealth-related organizations. The program is designed to promote cross-cultural understanding, global cooperation, and the professional development of students from around the world. Participants will be exposed to American values, workplace practices, and everyday life, while also contributing to local communities and industries.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be an international student currently enrolled in an academic program outside the U.S.
- Age between 18-50 years old (varies by country agreement).
- Must have proficiency in English (basic conversational skills or above).
- Must have a valid passport and proves to Common Wealth the need for this program
Program Structure:
1. Cultural Orientation (1 Week):
Participants will attend an orientation session upon arrival in the U.S., which will cover the following topics:
- U.S. history, culture, and customs
- Basic American workplace etiquette and communication
- Safety and legal considerations
- Overview of the program and expectations
2. Work Placement (Up to 20 Hours per Week):
Students will work in a part-time position related to their field of study or general interest. Work can take place in various industries, including retail, hospitality, education, non-profit, and healthcare. The work experience will help students gain practical skills and professional exposure.
Possible Work Areas:
- Hospitality and Tourism: Students can work in hotels, museums, and tourist destinations, helping with customer service, event planning, and cultural activities.
- Retail and Sales: Working in U.S. stores, assisting with sales, customer service, inventory, and product demonstrations.
- Non-Profit and Social Services: Involving students in community outreach, assisting with fundraisers, event management, or marketing.
- Education and Tutoring: Assisting in K-12 schools, language centers, or universities with tutoring or administrative duties.
- Healthcare and Social Work: For students in health-related fields, assisting with research, patient care, or administrative tasks. Technology and Business: Internships or part-time jobs in IT support, marketing, project management, or business operations.
3. Cultural Integration Activities:
To enrich the cultural exchange experience, students will be encouraged to engage in local events and activities, such as:
- Attending local festivals, fairs, and cultural events
- Participating in volunteer activities to help local communities
- Weekly cultural exchange meetings with other international students to share experiences
- Trips to U.S. historical sites and landmarks
Work Description:
Key Responsibilities for Students:
- Customer Service: Greeting customers, answering questions, and providing information about products or services.
- Administrative Support: Helping with data entry, organizing files, scheduling meetings, or assisting with office tasks.
- Event Assistance: Supporting event planning and execution, coordinating logistics, and assisting guests.
- Sales and Marketing: Assisting with product demonstrations, creating promotional materials, and engaging with customers.
- Community Engagement: Participating in community outreach programs, helping with social media promotion, or assisting local non-profits.
Work Hours & Compensation:
Work Hours: Up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester (for F1 or J-1 visa holders, it’s generally limited to 20 hours). Full-time hours may be allowed during academic breaks (summer or winter holidays).
Compensation: Students will be compensated based on the role and location. Compensation can range from hourly wages to stipends or small allowances for living expenses. In certain cases, students may also receive accommodation or meal benefits.
Program Duration:
Typically, the program will last 6 months to 1 year, depending on the student’s academic calendar and visa conditions.
